Felicia.R. Beardsley
Archaeologist - Anthropologist

Dr. Beardsley received her Ph.D. in Anthropology from the University of Oregon in 1990, after completing a dissertation on the spatial and stylistic distribution of prehistoric monumental stone architecture across Easter Island. Since then, her research has concentrated on the islands of the western Pacific, where she has focused on their history of settlement and the ensuing complex interaction spheres visible in the patterning of material culture and oral histories. Her research interests also extend to geochemical and archaeometric studies, heritage conservation, and preservation law.

Her many published field reports, journal articles and conference papers have contributed to the foundation of archaeological research in the western Pacific, and include new models of settlement and the recognition of previously undocumented technology systems. She has documented the first evidence of coral fishhooks in the central Pacific, the earliest pottery making site on Yap, and new evidence for prehistoric village organization on Kosrae. She has also crafted historic preservation and conservation legislation for various State governments in the western Pacific, written nominations to the U.S. National Register of Historic Places for important cultural sites, served as the first technical witness for the Palau Supreme Court, and is part of a group of conservation scientists asked to develop a preservation plan for the monumental stone complex of Leluh, Kosrae.

In addition to courses in archaeology and forensics, Dr. Beardsley teaches courses in internship, issues in anthropology, ethnobotany, cultural anthropology, and sex and gender issues. For the past several years she has served as Secretary/Treasurer to the Society for Archaeological Sciences and is a contributing member to several scholarly societies, including the Indo-Pacific Pre-History Association. She has received commendations for her work from the governments of Japan, Yap, Kosrae, and various U.S. agencies. To many Pacific Islanders, she is the woman who knows how to 'see,' use a machete like a man, and has no fear of ghosts, conferring, in one instance, the title of 'fine gentleman.'
